I had not thought about the opening up the heads for more than just flow. That probably is the best option to lower compression if I'm going to port the heads anyways.

you reall y have to know what your doing with the heads to make it work properly.maybe be left to someone with experience in such things.it's easy to mess up and go to far or make it the wrong shape.be careful if you do decide to go forward but be forwarned that without a flowbench to test the results and make sure all ports are as should be and not all over the place as far as flow equality is concerned,it could hurt performance alot if not done properly.

On the contrary I think pistons and rods are definite weak points in the motor and given the correct replacements the 4.0 is a reasonable stout engine.

Agreed. Plus the possibility of hitting water if you go too far...

with all respect,on the contrary to what?the pistons and rods are the weak points,as are the valvesprings.good rod bolts and forged pistons along with a decent set of valvesprings and some stainless valves make this motor very sturdy indeed.

what come on how many stock non fac boosted 4.0 ish sized motors can easy make 2x the factory hp with only boost and duels. really ya the hyper pistons do break with bad tune. rods are not bad(rod bolts not so good).. i think there great motors, maybe outdated but so is my 300ci inline 6 and it will out last any thing made today

Yeah I won't be porting the heads myself. I'm grandfather owns his own head porting business, been doing it for almost 40 years now. I'm trying to learn how to do it right now. Probably do a little of the work on my heads but he will do most.
