3.7 test drive
every one keeps running out and test driving the 5.0 and for good reason. Its a beast stock. I however went straight for the 3.7L. While talking to the dealer I also learned that the 3.7 is going in the Edge as a sport model next year.
When I started it up it seemed a little eerily quiet as I'm used to mine which makes alot of beautiful sounds being dual with x and headers. when I got it out on the road it felt nice. almost too easy to steer. Yet again I'm used to mine with 4.10s which you have to stay ahead of. I drove a MCA edition with the base gears in it. Obviously my car pulls alot harder with the 4.10s but not by alot. If it had been with the 3.31s it might have suited me better. The car seemed to get up and go well but just was missing the slightest little something. It really left me feeling better about still having mine but I can see me getting one if the aftermarket starts exploding for it. On the limited path my dealer let me play in I really couldn't get it up in the rpm band but the more I think about it the more I feel like I would want the manual or need to wait till the performance pack came out for it. If I end up with one in the forseeable future I will have to find a intake tune and exhaust combo for it or no dice. Straight to a stripped GT I go.

I drove a base '11 with automatic and the standard 2.73 gears. The car was a lot smoother and quieter than my '07. Even though the 1st gear and 2.73 gears gives more torque multiplication than 1st and 3.31 gears in my '07, the car felt a little soft off the line compared to mine. I think anyone ordering an '11 should go for the 3.31 axle package. I had an automatic '98 V6 that came with 2.73 gears. I had 3.27 gears installed and it made a huge difference in the responsiveness of the car. I guess they are going with the tall gears for the gas mileage.

Interesting. Good to get some feedback on the V6 test drives.

It seems that every that tests a V6 or V8 keep saying its missing that little "oomph" Well the fact of the mattert is the car is stock and made for the general public. My car was the first new car I had and the most powerful at the time so I thought it was prety zippy and then I got a CAI/tune and that just woke it all up. I wouldn't expect neck snapping performance right of the box but i have all faith that a cai/tune on either the 6 or 8 will definetly change things. Good review glad to see one over the sixer

I'm going to test drive one either tonight or tomorrow! Let's hope I can stay away from the 5.0 though! hehe

We're very tough critics because A: all of us mostly have tricked out 4.0s B:There was such a huge buildup for the 2011 C: We review from the performance aspect, not the other amazing safety and build quality features that it brings.
We're Ford's toughest critics, but we make up a very small fraction of V6 owners. It's nice to see that they really are striving to please the crowd that appreciates the inherent qualities of the V6 while still providing for the other 90% of the general public who wants some pep, but who would rather not hear the exhaust/engine, be thrown back in their seat for just pushing the gas, and want max MPGs.
So I guess that's why I take these things with a grain of salt...I know some of my Collective brethren have become rather defensive over the mixed reviews of the 2011, but we forget we're buying a stock car.

These two reviews directly reflect the feeling I got when I drove the 5.0 and when I viewed my opionions I got trashed. With 305 hp the 3.7 is a lot faster than any of the 4.0 N/A's running around Same way a 5.0 will smoke my car,,, but it flat out doesn't feel like it. The cars are so smooth and refined that you are slightly disconnected by the experience. I drove an SLS and came away with the same feeling, youre flying in the car but you just don't know it. So flame away

True, and we're all looking for different driving experiences. I'm an A/C delete, Am/FM radio, cloth seat, loud exhaust kinda guy while my friend is a heated leather, nav system, quiet interior kinda guy. He thinks I'm a complete moron for A/C delete and being fine with clothe whereas I think he's strange for wanting so many creature comforts in a mustang. It's amazing we can even stand each other. lol
But again, some are looking for that smooth, quiet, linear power while some are looking for the ball-to-walls, oh my god this thing sounds like it's going 220 kinda driving experience. So when the latter jumps in a 5.0, it feels slow. We know the reality is otherwise, but it doesn't get your blood flowing like the previous models. Such is life...that's why I can't hate.

I agree with the thought that a cai and tune should bring this car to life. I also think if it had the 3.31 gears it would have felt better. I'm thinking for the 6 racer the best recommendation would be order 3.31 gears and performance pack. I can't wait to see what people do with these. It was way faster than my nearly full bolt-on 6 but it was so refined I lost that sporty feel I thought it would have
